Stewart has been coming to Ride United since the club was founded in September 2025. He heard about it after meeting another deaf man who was already attending, and comes with Fern, who supports him with his communication skills using British Sign Language (BSL).

Stewart is 46 years old and was born with quadriplegic cerebral palsy. He is determined to live life to the full. Stewart had a bicycle when he was younger and occasionally visited Norwich Wheels for All when attending a previous day centre, but found it difficult to commit regularly due to centre restrictions and limited flexibility.

Now that adapted cycling is on Stewart’s doorstep, he is very keen to attend Ride United regularly. He enjoys the great sense of achievement he gets from completing the 400-metre circuit and meeting up with friends.

Stewart has already completed over 100 laps, earning himself a red Ride United cap. He loves challenging himself, and so enthusiastic are all the riders that we are now even thinking about having T-shirts made for those who reach 500 laps!

At the club, Stewart has found friendship, is cheered on around the circuit and has increased his stamina and fitness. He can now complete 29 laps in one session, compared with just four when he first started. He has also taken part in the community Great East Anglian Run around King’s Lynn and enjoys using both an adapted hand cycle and a trike.

Stewart is a great example of what a club like Ride United can do for people who may otherwise face barriers to taking part in cycling and community activities.
